GQ Fit School: Shirt Fit

“Fit” class is in session.

If there’s only one thing you should know about clothes, you should know how your clothes should fit. Fit is the first thing people notice. It’s obvious if your clothes are too big or too small — there’s no hiding it.

But don’t worry, we’re here to help. Because ultimately when you’re wearing clothes that fit well, you will feel and look your best.

Here’s how to tell if your shirt really fits:

Shoulder Seam

One of the first things you should look at when trying on a shirt is where the shoulder seam hits. It should sit right at the edge of your shoulder bone.

Cuff Length

When buttoned, the cuff should hit at the smallest part of your wrist. When wearing a watch, it should touch your watch, and sometimes even cover it.

Collar Fit

You should be able to easily button the top buttons without struggling. When buttoned all the way to the top, you should be able to comfortably fit 1 finger between your neck and the collar. It should feel a bit snug when you do this, but that’s a good thing. If you can fit more fingers in between your collar and neck, then it’s too loose. You should be able to wear it buttoned all day without feeling uncomfortable. This will be important when you wear a tie.

Chest Fit

For chest fit, you shouldn’t struggle to get any of the buttons fastened. The shirt should lay flat on your chest, and there shouldn’t be any gaps in the fabric between the buttons. There shouldn’t be any excess fabric around the front or side of the shirt.

Shirt Length

When the shirt is untucked, it should hit right below your back pant pockets. When tucked, there shouldn’t be too little or too much fabric out the top of your pants.
